HIE bounces back!

HIE recorded a dramatic victory over the University of Nouakchott in an exciting football tussle in the Maracana 5-a-side pitch. This was a return encounter and HIE were looking for revenge after losing a final to the University in early May, 2022.

The HIE team was ably represented by the following students:  Aboya (Captain), Cheikh, Djibril, Chamak, Brahim, Hamid and Mohamed (Goalkeeper)

As expected, the match was a tight affair throughout. The University of Nouakchott team had played together on many occasions before, which was not the case with HIE whose team had not had the time or opportunity to practice. Both sides showcased their footballing skills, the goalkeepers were  excellent and came to the rescue of their teams on many occasions. The match ebbed and flowed, although the University of Nouakchott always seemed to be 1 or 2 goals ahead. As the match progressed, it seemed that HIE would suffer another defeat. With 5 minutes left, the score stood at 9-7 in favour of the University of Nouakchott. HIE needed a miracle … And they got one! With a Herculean effort, they managed to pull the score back to 9-9. In what turned out to be the last play of the match, Cheikh stepped up and scored the winner to make it 10-9 in favour of HIE. The fans erupted and the University of Nouakchott players sank to their knees when Mr. Gerry blew the final whistle. It was a joyous moment for the HIE players who had given so much and represented HIE so proudly.

We don’t think this is the end of the story. At 1-1, the score is nicely poised for a deciding match between these 2 sides. When, where etc, … We’ll let you know.
