HIE Higher Institute of English
The In-House Courses Department was awarded a contract to devise and run a one-year English programme for 24 technicians. The technicians had been recruited and appointed by BP.
HIE has expertise in designing courses for special purpose English having already done so in various sectors including banking, the military, and air traffic control. However, this was to be a full-time course. With staff members having had several years’ experience in the oil & gas sector, HIE was well-placed to design and deliver a balanced programme that included general and industry specific language as well as self-directed and audio-visual sessions where the learners took a great deal of autonomy over their work.
Having completed the programme, the technicians will now move on to more core technical studies in Nouakchott and then Scotland. HIE is well-placed to offer similar programmes to other energy and extractive industry companies operating in Mauritania.
